In a recent address, Singapore's Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, highlighted the fragility of social cohesion and the importance of safeguarding it. Her comments were prompted by a series of problematic social media posts that sought to undermine the nation's multicultural identity.
Teo emphasized that Singapore's social cohesion has been meticulously built over an extended period and must be protected from those who aim to cast doubt on it. She urged the public to remain vigilant and not allow any attempts to disrupt the nation's unity.
The minister's remarks were in response to 14 posts on various social media platforms that targeted the Indian community and threatened Singapore's multicultural model. These posts, believed to have originated from a China-based platform, were subsequently shared on other platforms, according to investigations by the police and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Teo, who had personally viewed the videos, emphasized that they did not represent the views of Singaporeans. She called on the public to refrain from circulating such harmful content and instead focus on strengthening community ties.
"Beyond removing these kinds of harmful videos, it is also about our daily efforts to strengthen ties in the community, get to know one another, and appreciate one another," she said.
One particular post that caught Teo's attention depicted a religious procession in Chinatown along Pagoda Street, implying that Indians were not welcome in Singapore. This incident hit close to home for the minister, as Pagoda Street is located within her constituency, Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency.
Teo pointed out the religious diversity within her constituency, which includes Buddhist and Hindu temples, a mosque, and a Methodist church, all within a short walking distance. She highlighted events like the Jalan Besar Family Sports Carnival as opportunities for Singaporeans to strengthen community bonds and foster racial harmony.
"Our racial harmony is precious, and we have been very vigilant against attempts to sow tensions between our races and divide Singaporeans," she said. "These videos are clearly one such attempt."
Teo warned that while the current target may be the Indian community, other races and communities could be targeted in the future. She emphasized the need to remain united and not allow such attempts to divide the nation.
